The "No" of Affirmation

Have you ever heard anyone, including yourself, begin an affirmative response to a statement with the word "no"? For example:

Person 1: I think Idiocracy is hilarious.
Person 2: No, I do, too.

I promise you -- you have. It's an interesting phenomenon, since the statement is one of agreement or affirmation, yet it begins with a term of disagreement or negation. Why, you may ask? I have asked as well. Habits of speech? I would say so.

In any case, now that you've heard about it, you can start listening for it. You may be surprised at how often you hear it -- I was (especially from myself).

You may think this topic has no place here, but my experience has been, since I noticed this, that when I hear it, I find it rather amusing. Hence, the location. (Everything but this paragraph cross-posted at geekiness...)

favorite Daily Show bits, number 6

This one isn't political, but it's certainly good. It's even hard to explain logically, so just feel it -- and enjoy the Yakety Sax. It's How I Meteored Your Motherland, from February 2013.

Jon's impression of an unfazed Russian cow.

Speaking of Sarah Palin (as in "favorite Daily Show bits, number 4"), this is a particularly good one, in which Jon explains why Sarah Palin is so divisive: it's Sarah Palin's Folksy Word Salad, from June 2011. I particularly like when her voice goes up in pitch as she says "his horse through town," which, to me, is the giveaway that she knows she's BSing.

She's making his brain hurt.

favorite Daily Show bits, number 4

This old favorite, Sarah Palin Gender Card, from September 2008 is a classic Daily Show/Jon Stewart skewering of forked-tongued pundits and talking heads.Watch as Karl Rove, Bill O'Reilly, Dick Morris, and Nancy Pfotenhauer talk out of both sides of their moths. The subject, of course, is Sarah Palin and how she's a good egg -- and how people just like her who aren't her are rotten eggs.

What could Jon possibly be thinking?

favorite Daily Show bits, number 3

Third time is a charmer in our little series of my favorite Daily Show bits. It's about that old charmer, Herman Cain, and when he suspended his presidential campaign and quoted the movie Pokemon 2000. (FYI, it's not in The Pantheon, if you were wondering.) The title of the segment is Indecision 2012 - Oh, the Hermanity! and it's well worth a watch.

Quoth Mr. Stewart to Mr. Mewtwo: "Well said, magic
Japanese cat monster who was created as the result of a
genetic experiment and therefore has psychic powers
that far exceed those of its fellow Pokemon, well said."

favorite Daily Show bits, number 2

Part Deux of our epic series of posts: my favorite bits from the Daily Show. This one is from 2011 (Thursday, July 21, to be exact), and is in two parts. It's a lengthy, extended metaphor in which Jon Stewart compares the various Republican candidates to animal prey a la Wild Kingdom or something that doesn't date me as much as that.

Part I (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-july-21-2011/indecision-2012---survival-of-the-funded) is about Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich.

Part II (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-july-21-2011/indecision-2012---survival-of-the-funded---king-of-the-jungle) is about Tim Pawlenty, Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, and Mitt Romney. The truly awesome is the Herman Cain section, from about 1:17 to 4:07.

JS explains things about HC. Wait for the kitten.

favorite Daily Show bits, number 1

We inaugurate today a set of my all-time favorite segments from the Daily Show. They call this one Head of State, and it's from Hillary Clinton's confirmation hearings to become Secretary of State. True fact: when I first saw this, my wife was asleep next to me in bed, and I was laughing so hard that I had to put a pillow over my face so that I wouldn't wake her up. It was during the John Kerry section with the dolls, but the whole thing is really good.

"Eyes open! Win car!"
